Who has been watching the Great British Bake Off? I watched the first five episodes at the weekend and, unsurprisingly, was hit with a massive urge to bake. I wanted to do something bready, so I decided on Cinnamon Rolls. I used this book.
Husband bought me this book for my birthday when I first started baking, after I had said to him that I sometimes found baking difficult because I didn’t know what it was supposed to look like at the different steps of the recipe. This book has step by step photos and was a huge help when I was starting out (and now).
I followed the recipe exactly, making the dough and feeling slightly disappointed that it didn’t require kneading (I felt the need to knead).
As it was proving I made the filling, and here I misread the recipe and included the raisins in with the butter and sugar (I think it was alright though).
I then rolled the dough out to the approximate size and spread the filling over it, leaving a space all round the sides.
The dough was then rolled up into a sausage, although I have since learned (from the Great Australian Bake Off) that I did not roll it anything like tightly enough, which meant that some of the filling did leak out. The dough was then left to prove again.
I baked the rolls for the time stated, but made a mistake I seem to make every now and then. I got distracted. And even though I baked them for exactly the time stated, I burned them.
I’m pretty sure the rolls are meant to be bread like, not hard and biscuit like. And burned butter does not taste very nice.
I felt pretty disappointed that the first time I had baked in while turned out badly, and so annoyed with myself for making that novice mistake of not checking on them in the oven.
I guess I’ll just have to try again another time.
